Across the Board - EDI training

There are big issues affecting charity boards across the UK in 2025. Traditional models of governance are adapting slowly to a rapidly changing world. Recent studies show that 88% of those chairing charity boards in the UK are white - and 45%  don't know how or where to advertise vacancies to make their board more diverse. With less than 3% of trustees being under the age of 30, it's clear things need to change for boards to better represent the communities they serve.

This year we're excited to be launching Across the Board, a brand new training offer for charity boards which aims to help them embed sustainable equality, diversity and inclusion practices into their ways of working. Over the course of two workshops spaced six months apart from each other, we'll cover:

• Core EDI Concepts: Participants will understand key EDI (Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) terms and a practical framework for approaching board diversity
• Key Case Studies: Trustees will learn about practical applications of EDI practices and how to avoid common mistakes through a discussion of relevant case studies
• EDI Planning & Evaluation: The board will identify a specific EDI project or improvement area to focus on, based on key learnings from the first Across the Board workshop. In the second workshop, the board will discuss the outcomes, challenges and lessons learned from their EDI project.
• Aligning Board Values with EDI: Trustees will reflect on their organization's core values to better guide decisions related to EDI and working with young trustees specifically.
• EDI Strategy: Trustees will learn to apply an EDI lens to other board processes and workstreams, identifying areas for further improvement.
• Conversations Toolkit: Participants will be introduced to Young Trustees' Movement's 'Conversations Toolkit', a practical toolkit to help facilitate future discussions and practices around EDI across the board into the future

The key focus of Across the Board is helping board's practically and sustainably embed EDI learnings from our workshops into the ways they operate. All of our workshops have been developed through our experiences working with current and aspiring young trustees and boards. Our Across the Board workshops can be delivered on-line or in-person, with travel time & costs added for in-person sessions.
